Sowing Seeds of Sustainability: Indigenous Tree Nursery Project
The Green Umbrella Organization has established a native plant nursery that provides the foundation for ongoing sustainable forest restoration and community development projects in and around Thane and Mumbai.
Our ambitious project aims to cultivate and nurture rare indigenous trees from the seeds we collect during our seed collection drives. We take pride in establishing a nursery of rare, endemic plants which provides the foundation for ongoing sustainable forest restoration and community development projects in and around Thane and Mumbai. Since its establishment in August 2010, the nursery has also been serving as a training centre for local people and an environmental education facility.
We have recently opened the nursery for community programs, and ecological surveys are being conducted to examine the existing forest and identify important tree species to be propagated in the nursery. Our project now boasts of over 3500 seedlings of 160 native species.
